Jim Lindsay's diary:
5 October
Everyone else was full of their Oktoberfest stories and showing off their steins and
other souvenirs. Crafty campers had been able to sell on their Afghan coats and other
items for drinking money.
We did a circuit of the city centre for sightseeing (not lost for once) and then
headed north. Dave and Don W argued for the alternative Autobahn route back via
Stuttgart and Mannheim, which had the virtue of going past a clearly signposted slip
road that led into Rhein Main a few hundred yards on.
I think we were ahead of all or most of the other contingents by this time, so the
base staff were not totally ready for us. This also meant that we would have a rest
day on the following day, while the others caught up.
6 October
This day is almost a complete blank. I cannot remember even whether we left camp and
went into town. I think Greg borrowed the camp theatre that evening and gave us a
stirring speech about how good we had been and other laudatory things.
