Jim Lindsay's diary:
18 September
The camp at Taibad was very nice, with a set of dormitories and en suite
kitchens, but the sheer size of the Comex group meant that a full-scale
quarantine camp had been set up for us at Fariman, just under a hundred miles
from the border. They gave us a good breakfast of boiled egg and cheese, and
then we had to be on our way. We had a guide in his own vehicle, whose job it
was to ensure that we did not stop on the way and infect the population.
The roads were awful and we had one of these sessions when those of us in the
back seats were jolted up and down and smacked on the head by random items
falling from the racks. I was feeling distinctly uncomfortable and my gut was
not benefitting from all this, so it was quite a relief when we reached the
camp and I was able to go and find a toilet. Inevitably there was not much
space left for latecomers like us but we made a veranda into Edinburgh
territory. It had the benefit of being close to the food. It is a measure
of how unwell I felt that I did not eat much at lunchtime and spent most of
the rest of the day huddled in a corner.
