Comment: Although continuous autobahn driving, various features of the day's travel contributed to the relatively slow time, e.g. the obvious difficulties met in attempting to follow the convoy system , and the failures of the governer.
Jim Lindsay's diary:
We ground slowly down the autobahn at the mercy of a badly set
governor. It was a monotonous journey but every so often we were
jolted into alertness by passing the remains of gruesome road
accidents. In Salzburg we spent the night at a nice little campsite
under trees, with a beer stall set up at the gate by a local
entrepreneur. Greg was still trying to run a tightly timetabled convoy
system but remarkably few contingents managed to send anybody to the
navigators' meeting designed to set a schedule for the next day. On
the basis of form up to that point, maybe they could not find it.
There was a splendid toilet wagon, although its hand-rail gave the
users electric shocks. My diary records that Tony did the
dance of the seven sleeping bags that night, but mercifully there are
no details.
